Quantity Takeoff Calculator

Enter the dimensions of footings, columns, beams and slabs, the walls, and the rooms to finish, and get the quantities for the whole job: concrete, estimated rebar, bricks or blocks, mortar, plaster, paint, tiles and ceilings. Export the bill of quantities to PDF or Excel, or send it straight to the Construction Cost Estimator to price it.

Materials to order

MaterialUnitQuantity

Estimating quantities for budgets and early orders. Rebar comes from kg per m³ ratios, so order steel from the bar schedules, and check every quantity against the drawings. For one element at a time with bar cutting lists, use the Concrete & Rebar Calculator.

How it works

Take off quantities in three steps

1

Add the elements

Work through the tabs. Add a row for each footing, column, beam, slab or wall with its size and count, and the areas of the rooms to plaster, paint, tile or ceil.

2

Check the assumptions

Rebar ratios, waste, plaster thickness, paint coverage and mortar mixes start at common values. Change any of them on the Assumptions tab to match your specification.

3

Export or price it

Download the bill of quantities and the materials list as PDF, Excel or CSV, or open it in the Construction Cost Estimator with the quantities already filled in.

Rebar

Estimated rebar per m³ of concrete

Before the structural drawings are ready, rebar is estimated from typical ratios. The calculator starts from these values; replace them with the bar schedule figures once you have them.

ElementRebar, kg/m³
Isolated footings80
Strip footings90
Raft foundation110
Tie beams120
Columns180
Walls and cores110
Beams140
Solid slabs90
Flat slabs110

Blinding and plain concrete have no rebar. Steel is shown with 5% added for waste and laps.

Materials

How the materials are worked out

ItemBasis
ConcreteNet volume plus 5% waste. For site mixing: 250 kg cement per m³ of plain concrete and 350 kg for reinforced, with 0.4 m³ sand and 0.8 m³ gravel
Red brick25 × 12 × 6 cm bricks with 10 mm joints, plus 5% waste
Concrete block and AACConcrete blocks 40 × 20 cm and AAC blocks 60 × 20 cm on face; AAC laid with thin-bed adhesive
Plaster20 mm inside and 25 mm outside, cement and sand mortar
PaintSealer, 2 coats of putty at 0.35 kg/m² per coat, and 2 finish coats at 11 m²/L
TilesTiles counted by size with your waste allowance, 5 kg/m² adhesive and 0.3 kg/m² grout
CeilingsGypsum boards of 2.88 m² or 60 × 60 cm lay-in tiles, plus 7% waste

These are working assumptions for estimates. Check them against the specification and the manufacturer’s data before you order.

FAQ

Quantity takeoff questions

It is an estimate from typical kilograms of steel per cubic metre of concrete for each element, which is how rebar is budgeted before the bar bending schedule exists. Real ratios depend on spans, loads and the design code, so a heavily loaded column or a long-span beam can need much more. Use it for early budgets, and replace the ratios with figures from the structural drawings when you have them.

Yes. Each wall row has an openings field: enter the total area of doors and windows in that wall and it is deducted from the masonry, plaster and paint. A common rule is to ignore openings under 0.5 m², which take about as much effort as the wall around them.

Yes. The plaster tab has an Add both faces of the masonry button that turns every wall run into internal plaster rows, openings deducted. Change a row to external plaster for the outside face, and add ceilings separately if they are plastered.

Yes. Every size is entered in metres, and results are in m³, m², tonnes, kilograms, bags and pieces. Need to convert from feet and inches first? Use the unit converter.

Press Price these quantities. The Construction Cost Estimator opens with each bill item as a line. Type your unit rates on the lines, or save them once in My unit rates, and the estimate prices itself.
