Load your file into Revit

  1. Click Download KeyboardShortcuts.xml above.
  2. In Revit, open View tab › Windows panel › User Interface › Keyboard Shortcuts.
  3. Click Import at the bottom of the dialog and choose the downloaded file.
  4. Choose Overwrite to make Revit match this list exactly, or Merge to add these shortcuts to the ones you already have. Click OK.

Shortcut rules, as enforced by Revit: up to 5 letters, digits or symbols typed in sequence (WA, VV, 3W), a function key F2–F12, or one key with Ctrl, Shift, Ctrl+Shift, Ctrl+Alt, Shift+Alt or Ctrl+Shift+Alt. Alt on its own and reserved shortcuts such as Ctrl+C, Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+S, F1 and Shift+W are refused. Two commands may share a shortcut: Revit then lets you pick between them with the arrow keys before pressing Enter. Defaults and command names are taken from Revit 2024; your edits are saved in this browser only.

How it works

Set up your Revit shortcuts in 3 steps

1

Find the command

Type a command name, a shortcut such as VV, or a tab name such as Annotate. Switch to All commands to see the ones that have no shortcut yet.

2

Edit the shortcut

Click Edit and type one or more shortcuts separated by commas. The tool refuses anything Revit would refuse, and warns you when another command already uses the same keys.

3

Import it into Revit

Download KeyboardShortcuts.xml, then in Revit open View โ€บ User Interface โ€บ Keyboard Shortcuts, click Import and choose Overwrite or Merge. Print the cheat sheet to keep next to your screen.

Defaults from Revit 2024 and checked against Revit 2019 and 2027. Snap overrides such as SE (endpoints), SM (midpoints) and SI (intersections) work while you draw.

Your settings file

Where Revit keeps your shortcuts

Revit saves your shortcuts per user and per version in a file called KeyboardShortcuts.xml:

%APPDATA%\Autodesk\Revit\Autodesk Revit 2024\KeyboardShortcuts.xml

Paste the path into the File Explorer address bar and change 2024 to your version. The file only appears after you change a shortcut; until then Revit uses its built-in defaults. Each version has its own file, so a new Revit release starts from the defaults again.

The safest way to move shortcuts between computers or versions is the Keyboard Shortcuts dialog itself: Export on the old one, Import on the new one. Overwrite replaces every shortcut with the file; Merge adds the file’s shortcuts to the ones you already have.

The file stores each command by its CommandId, so it works in every language version of Revit.

FAQ

Revit shortcut questions

Open the View tab, then Windows panel โ€บ User Interface โ€บ Keyboard Shortcuts. Click Import at the bottom of the dialog, choose your KeyboardShortcuts.xml, then pick Overwrite to replace all your shortcuts or Merge to add to them. Click OK to save.

Yes. Click Print cheat sheet above and choose Save as PDF as the printer. You get an A4 landscape sheet grouped by category, and it includes any shortcuts you changed, so the PDF matches your own Revit.

Start with the commands you use every hour: WA (wall), DR (door), AL (align), MV (move), CO (copy), TR (trim), DI (dimension), VV (visibility/graphics) and HH/HI (temporary hide and isolate). Then assign two-letter shortcuts to the commands you click most that have none, such as a 3D view or Reset temporary hide/isolate.

Revit reserves some keys for Windows and its own menus, such as Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V, Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+S, F1 and Shift+W, and it refuses Alt on its own as a modifier. A shortcut can be up to 5 letters, digits or symbols typed in sequence, or one key combined with Ctrl, Shift or Alt (Alt only together with Ctrl or Shift). This tool checks the same rules before you export.

Revit allows it. When you type the keys, Revit shows the first matching command in the status bar; use the arrow keys to switch to another one and press Enter to run it. The tool marks these shared shortcuts so you can decide whether to keep them. Some defaults are shared out of the box, such as RG (remove from group and render gallery).

No. Reset temporary hide/isolate has no default shortcut in Revit 2024, even though many lists show HR. Search for it in the tool, click Edit, type HR and import the file into Revit to add it.
