Find a RAL colour

Type a number (7016, RAL 7016, ral7016) or part of a name in English or German.

Nearest RAL to a HEX or RGB colour

Paste a HEX code (#3A3F44 or #FFF), type three RGB values from 0 to 255, or use the colour picker.

Enter a colour to see the 5 nearest RAL Classic colours.

Ranked by CIEDE2000 colour difference (ΔE00), with sRGB converted to CIELAB under D65. Below 1 is practically identical, below 2 very close, below 5 close.

Choose a RAL colour to see its HEX, RGB and Revit values.

Set the colour on a Revit material

    1. Open Manage › Materials (Material Browser) and select the material. Duplicate it first if other elements should keep the old colour.
    2. Graphics tab › Shading › click Color, type the Red, Green and Blue values and click OK. This is the colour in Shaded views.
    3. Appearance tab › click the Color swatch of the appearance asset and enter the same RGB values. Realistic views and renders use this one.

Tick Use Render Appearance under Shading and the shaded colour follows the Appearance colour, so you only keep one value up to date. If the appearance asset is shared by other materials (the number next to the hand icon), duplicate the asset before you change it.

Screen colours are approximations: RAL does not publish official sRGB values, and monitors, gloss and lighting change how a colour looks. Use a physical RAL fan deck for final selection. HEX values are the on-screen values published by RAL.

    How it works

From RAL code to Revit material in 3 steps

    1

    Find the colour

Type a RAL number such as 7016 or a name such as anthracite, or pick a swatch from the chart. Have a HEX code instead? Paste it to get the 5 nearest RAL colours.

    2

    Copy the values

Every value has its own Copy button: HEX, RGB, HSL, CMYK and CIELAB, plus an approximate LRV.

    3

    Enter them in Revit

In the Material Browser, type the Red, Green and Blue values into Graphics > Shading > Color and into the Appearance colour, or tick Use Render Appearance.

    RAL 9006White aluminium#9A9D9D154, 157, 157Metal cladding, frames (metallic)

Screen values are approximations. RAL 9006 is a metallic finish, so a flat RGB only gives its base colour. Check a physical RAL fan deck before you order.

    Revit how-to

How to set a material colour in Revit

    1. Go to Manage > Materials and select the material. Duplicate it first if other elements should keep the old colour.
    2. On the Graphics tab, under Shading, click Color and type the Red, Green and Blue values (0 to 255). This sets the colour in Shaded views.
    3. On the Appearance tab, click the Color swatch and enter the same values. Realistic views and renders use this colour.

Tick Use Render Appearance under Shading and the shaded colour follows the Appearance colour, so there is only one value to maintain. If the appearance asset is shared by other materials, duplicate the asset before you edit it.

    RAL 7016 Anthracite grey → Red 59, Green 64, Blue 68

For pearl and metallic RAL colours, start from a metallic appearance asset and use the RGB as its base colour.

    FAQ

    RAL to RGB questions

RAL publishes RAL 7016 on screen as #3B4044, which is RGB 59, 64, 68. In Revit, enter Red 59, Green 64 and Blue 68 in the Color dialog. Other websites list values such as #383E42 or #293133; these come from different conversions, and the second is clearly darker.

No. RAL colours are defined by physical reference samples, not by screen values, so every RGB or HEX value is an approximation that also depends on your monitor. This tool uses the on-screen values published by RAL. Always confirm the final choice against a physical RAL fan deck.

Paste the HEX code (for example #3A3F44) or the RGB values into the reverse lookup. The tool converts the colour to CIELAB (D65) and ranks all RAL Classic colours by the CIEDE2000 difference ΔE. Below 1 is practically identical, below 2 very close and below 5 close.

Open the Material Browser, then enter the RGB values in Graphics > Shading > Color and in the Appearance tab colour. Ticking Use Render Appearance makes the shaded colour follow the appearance colour automatically.

RAL 9010 Pure white (#EFEEE5) is a slightly warm, creamy white. RAL 9016 Traffic white (#EFF0EB) is cooler and is the usual white for PVC and aluminium windows. On screen they differ by only about ΔE 1.9, but the difference is clear on a real facade, so compare physical samples.

The light reflectance value (LRV) runs from 0 for black to 100 for a perfect white. The tool estimates it from the screen colour as luminance Y × 100, which is fine for early design but not for compliance checks. Ask the paint manufacturer for the measured LRV. Pearl and metallic finishes have no single reliable LRV.
