Paste the build from Help > About and see which Revit update you have, when Autodesk released it and whether a newer update is out. Below it is every Revit and Revit LT build from 2015 to 2027, checked against Autodesk’s own build list and release notes. Need families that open in your version? Browse Revit families.

Look up a build
Also works with the version from Windows (24.2.0.63), an update name (Revit 2024.2) or the whole About text.
Where to find your build
- In Revit, open Help (the arrow next to the ? at the top right) and choose About Autodesk Revit.
- The build is in the upper-right corner of the About window, for example 20230308_1635(x64). Select it and copy it.
- Without opening Revit, Windows Programs and Features shows the version instead, for example 24.2.0.63.
The first part of a build is the date it was made (2023-03-08), not the date it was released.

Build is the text in Help > About. Version is the number Windows shows in Programs and Features. Install rows are full installers Autodesk released with a different build from the matching update. Revit LT shows the same build as Revit for the same update, except where a row says Revit LT only.
File compatibility between Revit versions
- Revit models, families and templates are not backward compatible. Once a file is upgraded and saved in a newer release, earlier releases cannot open it. Autodesk Help
- A newer release opens files from earlier releases and upgrades them automatically. This applies to models (RVT), families (RFA) and templates (RTE). Save after the upgrade so it does not run again. Autodesk Help
- Loading an older family into a project upgrades it as it loads. If you cancel the upgrade, the family is not loaded. Autodesk Help
- Opening a file saved in a newer release gives the error "The version of Revit used to save the file is not readable by this version of Revit". The release that opens a file must be the same as or newer than the one that saved it. Autodesk Help
- If you upgraded and saved a file by mistake, open the most recent backup file in the earlier release. Some recent changes may be lost. Autodesk Help

Sources and how this list is checked
Every row starts from an Autodesk statement: the build-number support article, the release notes for each update, or the product updates pages for 2015 to 2019. Other lists were only used to cross-check. A row marked Unconfirmed appears in only one non-Autodesk list. Release dates are the dates Autodesk made each update available; a month without a day means only the month is sourced.

In Revit, click the arrow next to the ? at the top right and choose About Autodesk Revit. The build is in the upper-right corner of the About window, for example 20230308_1635(x64).

What a Revit build number means
Revit shows two numbers for every update. The build is in Help > About. The version is what Windows lists in Programs and Features and what the installer reports.

Since Revit 2018 the version follows the update name: the first number is the year, the second the update and the third the hotfix. In 2018 the hotfix number is used as is (18.3.3.18 = 2018.3.3); from 2019 on it is multiplied by ten (26.5.10.38 = 2026.5.1). For 2015 to 2017 the version is a running build count and does not match the update name.
How Autodesk has named Revit updates

From 2015 to 2018 Autodesk kept two update lines in parallel for a while, so those years have two latest updates. To see which Revit version saved a file, check it with the Revit Version Checker.
Revit build number questions
In Revit, open Help (the arrow next to the ? at the top right) and choose About Autodesk Revit. The build number is in the upper-right corner of the About window, for example 20230308_1635(x64). Without opening Revit, Windows Programs and Features shows the version instead, for example 24.2.0.63. Both work in the lookup above.
It is Revit 2024 as first released (version 24.0.4.427), which Autodesk shipped in April 2023. The build is the date and time it was made: 8 March 2023 at 16:35. (x64) means 64-bit. The build date is always a little earlier than the release date, so use the table to see when an update actually came out.
When this list was last checked on November 5, 2026, the latest updates were Revit 2027.3 (build 20260907_1515, released September 15, 2026), Revit 2026.5.1 (build 20261015_1515, October 27, 2026) and Revit 2025.5.1 (build 20261019_1515, October 22, 2026). The Latest update table above shows the newest update for every version. You can download updates from Autodesk Account.
From Revit 2018 on, the first number is the Revit year and the second is the update: 24.2.0.63 is Revit 2024.2. The third number is the hotfix, times ten from 2019 on, so 24.3.60.12 is Revit 2024.3.6 and 18.3.3.18 is Revit 2018.3.3. For Revit 2015 to 2017 the version is a running build count (Revit 2016 R2 is 16.0.1063.0), so paste it in the lookup to get the update name.
Yes, for the same update. Autodesk’s Revit LT release notes give the same Help > About build as Revit for every LT update from 2020 to 2027, with two exceptions that had their own LT builds: Revit LT 2022.0.1 (20210710_2130) and Revit LT 2024.1.1 (20230830_1515). Both are in the list and marked Revit LT only. Revit and Revit LT of the same year also open and save each other’s projects.
No. Revit models, families and templates are not backward compatible. A newer Revit opens and upgrades files from older versions, but once a file is saved in the newer version, older versions show the error “The version of Revit used to save the file is not readable by this version of Revit”. If you upgraded a file by mistake, open its most recent backup in the older version. Use the Revit Version Checker to see which version saved a file before you open it.
